Writing – At Arnett Hills we believe in providing our children with engaging and purposeful reasons to write. We use a teach through text approach, following a meaningful framework of immersion and exploration of a text, practice of a skill and then application. We aim to link our writing with quality texts and curriculum themes, and with skills relating to grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling. These are taught discretely, then practiced and applied through shared and modelled writing. 

 

Oracy- Throughout their time in Arnett Hills, pupils from Early Years to Year 6 are taught to continually develop their confidence and competence in spoken language and listening skills. Song and rhyme are core to promoting the spoken word, beginning in EYFS and continuing throughout both KS1 and KS2.  Children are encouraged to listen carefully across a range of situations, to different audiences, as well as to ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge.  Dialogic teaching facilitates the use of spoken word in the classroom and provides children agency of their own learning. The use of modelled language and sentence stems helps ensure an inclusive approach and narrow the gap on educational disadvantage.  We strive for the children to become confident, coherent speakers who can engage in discussions, debates and dramatic performances through purposeful speaking and listening opportunities.
